Tips for Jump-Starting Your Car

Tips for Jump-Starting Your Car | Breinigsville, PA

If your battery is due for a replacement or you simply forgot to turn off your headlights overnight, you may find that your car won’t start, no matter how much you turn your keys in the ignition. Follow these tips for jump-starting your car so that you can bring it to the dealership and get a new battery.

  1. Consult your owner’s manual. It may have important information you don’t expect about your car’s battery and how to jump-start it.
  2. Use quality jumper cables. Invest in quality cables that do a good job of harnessing electricity, and avoid old or well-used cables that can present a safety hazard.
  3. Red goes to positive. Attach a red clamp to the positive end of the working battery, then the other red clamp to the positive end of the dead battery.
  4. Black is more complicated. Attach the black clamp to negative end of the working battery, and the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface of the engine block.
  5. Be patient. Let the working battery run for a while. It can take up to 30 minutes to charge a battery depending on how drained it is. If it still doesn’t work, it will need to be replaced.
  6. Remove the cables in reverse order. There’s a fire risk if you don’t.
  7. Drive your car. After you successfully start your car and remove the cables, don’t turn it off immediately or let it idle. Drive it for half an hour so that the alternator can charge the battery.

If your battery is giving you problems regularly, it probably needs to be replaced. Visit Krause Toyota in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania, where our technicians will take care of it!
